Manchester United has reached a significant milestone by purchasing a 25-acre site near Old Trafford, providing the majority of the land necessary for a planned 100,000-seat stadium. This acquisition facilitates the development of what is intended to be the largest sports arena in the United Kingdom, rendering the previously problematic Freightliner terminal site unnecessary.
Chief executive of the development project, Collette Roche, noted that this location allows the club to maintain its history and traditions while constructing a state-of-the-art facility. The stadium is the core of a larger £2 billion regeneration scheme spanning 370 acres, which aims to generate 15,000 new homes and create nearly 100,000 jobs across the region.
First proposed in 2025, the project follows co-owner Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to modernize the club’s infrastructure after the aging 74,000-capacity Old Trafford stadium faced increasing maintenance challenges. A comprehensive master-plan for the area is expected to be released on July 9.
