The club admitted that it failed to anticipate how frequently fans shared account credentials for legitimate purposes, such as assisting family and friends with ticket applications. This oversight led to thousands of accounts being restricted, with many fans fearing they would lose their season tickets.
The investigation began after the club noticed suspicious activity, including one instance where over 1,000 accounts were accessed from a single device. Following a fans forum on July 30, the organization acknowledged that its communication and execution were flawed. In a statement, the club expressed regret for the distress caused to loyal supporters and confirmed that restrictions have been lifted for those who provided reasonable explanations.
United maintained that the investigation is necessary to combat organized touting, which they claim prevents genuine fans from accessing seats. While the review remains active, the club clarified that season tickets will only be revoked in confirmed instances of systematic misuse or financial gain. Furthermore, officials promised that any reclaimed season tickets will be reissued to other fans rather than converted into corporate hospitality packages.
