Lionel Messi netted two goals on Wednesday, establishing a new record for the highest number of goals scored in the Leagues Cup. The achievement occurred during Inter Miami’s 4-2 home victory against Atletico San Luis as the 2026 tournament group stage commenced.
Messi, a key player in Miami’s 2023 championship run, has now accumulated 14 total goals in the tournament, which features teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX. Although David Rodriguez put San Luis ahead early in the fourth minute, Messi leveled the score shortly thereafter. Telasco Segovia put the home side in front in the 26th minute.
Messi added his second goal just before the break, while Brazilian defender Micael increased the lead to 4-1 during first-half stoppage time. Rafa Llorente managed to score a consolation goal for Atletico in the second half. Elsewhere in the competition, Dallas secured a 2-0 win over Queretaro, and Leon defeated Nashville 1-0.
