Argentina star Lionel Messi made his return to Inter Miami’s lineup following the passing of his father on Wednesday evening. Jorge Messi died at age 68 after struggling with an illness.
Entering as a substitute in the 46th minute, Messi joined the Leagues Cup match against Club Leon. The crowd greeted the 38-year-old with significant applause as he stepped onto the field.
Despite the warm welcome, Messi could not impact the game, and Inter Miami fell in a 3-2 defeat. This loss, combined with a previous defeat against CF Monterrey and a victory over Atletico San Luis, results in the team’s elimination from the competition. Inter Miami had previously reached the final of this tournament and secured the 2023 Leagues Cup title.
