Former international full-back Leigh Halfpenny has transitioned into a new role, joining the Wales coaching staff as their kicking coach for the upcoming Nations Championship. Having concluded his professional playing career at the close of the 2025-26 season, the 37-year-old will support head coach Steve Tandy during the summer Test matches against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa.
This appointment marks a return to the coaching setup for Halfpenny, who previously assisted with skills and kicking duties during a tour of Japan last summer. He steps into the vacancy left by Rhys Patchell, who held the position on a part-time basis before departing the Dragons for Benetton. Halfpenny, who retired as Wales’ third-highest all-time points scorer with 801 points from 101 Tests, had most recently served as a player-coach at Cardiff.
Head coach Steve Tandy expressed his enthusiasm regarding the addition, noting that Halfpenny’s vast experience will be invaluable for the squad’s developing backs. His arrival complements a bolstered management team that also features Peter Murchie, Dan Lydiate, and Paul James. Wales is scheduled to begin their campaign against Fiji this Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium.
