Sylvester Odion Akhaine, a Political Science professor at Lagos State University, is slated to give the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture in Lagos on July 23, 2026. This event, hosted by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja. The theme for the gathering is The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections.
According to NGE President Eze Anaba and Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, this yearly event was established in 2023 to celebrate the contributions of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a notable journalist, former Lagos Governor, and ex-Minister of Works. Akhaine, known for his work in democracy advocacy, holds a PhD from Royal Holloway and leads the Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarisation.
Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the former Governor of Ekiti State, will lead the proceedings, with current Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attending as the Special Guest of Honour. The lecture aims to bring together media executives and civil society members to discuss governance and nation-building.
The event expects attendees from various media organizations and academic institutions, including Caleb University, Yaba College of Technology, and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. Past speakers for this memorial series include Felix Adenaike, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
