Lagos Taskforce Seizes 309 Bikes and Clears Illegal Structures in Security Sweep

Lagos authorities have impounded 309 motorcycles and demolished illegal roadside structures across several corridors in a targeted effort to improve security and traffic flow.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, widely known as the Taskforce, recently seized 309 commercial motorcycles caught operating on prohibited routes. This enforcement drive spanned the ECOWAS Road corridor and several neighboring zones.

During the operation, authorities removed numerous unauthorized structures, such as shanties, makeshift kiosks, and stalls, which were cited as causes of traffic congestion and environmental issues. Impacted locations included Orile-Iganmu, Mile 2, Festac First Gate, and Okoko, among others.

Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, expressed concern over the high volume of illegal developments in these regions. He noted that the initiative, supported by the Ministry of the Environment and the Lagos State Police Command, aims to improve the city’s security by clearing potential criminal hideouts. This effort aligns with the government’s broader security strategy under the THEMES Plus Agenda to combat threats like kidnapping.

In addition to the impounded bikes, which will face court-ordered forfeiture under the 2018 Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, officers dismantled abandoned goods and various obstructions along the highways. Akerele emphasized that the unit remains dedicated to enforcing state laws to reduce traffic, curb criminality, and restore order throughout Lagos.
