Over the course of a single week, the Lagos State Task Force confiscated 278 commercial motorcycles, locally referred to as Okada, during a widespread enforcement campaign. This initiative focused on riders disregarding the 2018 Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, which forbids commercial motorcycle operations on specific highways and restricted zones.
Led by Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani, this operation builds upon previous crackdowns aimed at enhancing public safety and security across the region. Officers conducted inspections throughout numerous locations, including Ikorodu, Festac, Idimu, Egbeda, and Iyana Ipaja, among others.
The agency reported that many riders were detained for utilizing banned routes. Furthermore, officials observed riders transporting dangerous goods like gas cylinders and petroleum, as well as carrying children in perilous conditions. Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, the Task Force chairman, confirmed that the seized motorcycles will be processed for potential forfeiture via the court system. Akerele emphasized that these enforcement actions will persist until total compliance with the law is achieved, stating that the authorities remain committed to preventing criminal elements from undermining public order.
