The Lagos State government has shuttered the Oshodi Resettlement Market effective immediately. This decision follows a violent struggle between market vendors and personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps during a recent enforcement drive.
The operation was designed to clear out beggars and alleged hoodlums to improve market order. Tensions rose when traders blocked the arrest of certain individuals, causing the situation to spiral. Officials were forced to retreat as the scene descended into chaos, resulting in damage to several sanitation corps vehicles.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the closure via social media on Tuesday. He stated that the measure was essential to calm the area, protect state property, and uphold public order. Wahab strongly denounced the assault on enforcement staff and the destruction of government equipment, asserting that such behavior is unacceptable.
The state government emphasized that its cleanup and enforcement initiatives are meant to benefit the public. Officials warned that any individuals attempting to interfere with state duties will face strict legal consequences.
