Lagos State Issues Strict Compliance Warning to Orphanage Operators

Lagos State authorities have cautioned orphanage operators to strictly follow regulatory standards and child protection laws or face potential closure.

The Lagos State Government has formally instructed all orphanage home administrators to adhere to established regulatory standards. Officials warned that failure to comply with these child protection guidelines will result in severe sanctions to ensure the safety of vulnerable children.

During a recent stakeholder meeting held at the Folarin Coker Staff Clinic in Alausa, the Ministry of Youth and Social Development highlighted the necessity of balancing compassion with professional accountability. Commissioner Mobolaji Ogunlende emphasized that orphanages must provide more than just basic shelter; they are required to offer quality education, healthcare, and psychological support in secure environments.

Permanent Secretary Pharm. Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu noted that mandatory requirements include valid licensing, proper facility registration, and the hiring of vetted, qualified caregivers. Legal director Kemi Olugbode reinforced these points by outlining the state’s Child’s Rights Law, which dictates that all admissions must follow due legal process and that the best interest of the child remains the highest priority.

To prevent abuse and neglect, the ministry urged operators to implement rigorous background checks and consistent staff training. Alhaji Ganiu Olaiwola, representing the Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria, confirmed that a specialized task force has been established to monitor facilities across Lagos. He stated that non-compliant institutions face immediate closure to protect the welfare of children in their care.
