The Association of Real Estate Developers of Lagos State (AREDOLS) has formally asked the Lagos State House of Assembly to intervene regarding the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). In a petition submitted on August 10, AREDOLS leadership, including Chairman Kamil Shodeinde and Secretary Ahmod Olukotun, accused the agency of incorrectly labeling building supplies as trash.
The developers argue that items like planks and derricks are essential, recyclable construction components rather than waste products. They contend that the agency’s decision to impose fees and penalties on these materials unfairly increases the financial strain on builders and clients, ultimately inflating housing costs in the state. Furthermore, the group has requested that the assembly look into LAWMA’s overall performance in handling residential refuse. AREDOLS insists that distinct waste categories necessitate specific management protocols and has called for a swift review of current agency policies to alleviate the economic pressure on the housing sector.
