Labour Party Presidential Candidate Okereke Explains Selection of Female Running Mate

Labour Party presidential candidate Dr. Chibuzor Okereke highlights merit, competence, and inclusive governance as the core reasons for selecting Hajia Bintu Konto as his 2027 running mate.

Dr. Chibuzor Okereke, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2027 election, has clarified that Hajia Bintu Konto was selected as his running mate due to her proven expertise, merit, and the necessity for an inclusive government. Speaking during an interview in Abuja, Okereke emphasized that the Labour Party prioritizes female leadership, noting that the party currently holds several key positions with women at the helm.

Okereke explained that Konto’s selection was not solely based on her gender but rather her extensive background as a public health specialist and her history of effective leadership. He stated that the party considered various factors, including national political dynamics and geopolitical balance, to ensure the ticket could deliver quality governance. By including women, who make up a significant portion of Nigeria’s population, Okereke argued that the party is tapping into underutilized human resources.

The candidate also noted that Konto’s nomination aims to inspire young women across northern Nigeria, where female representation in political offices remains low. He expressed hope that her role as a humanitarian and development expert will serve as a positive example for future leaders. Addressing the state of the party, Okereke asserted that despite the departure of Peter Obi, the LP retains its base of six million voters from 2023. He intends to replicate the successful governance model established by Governor Alex Otti of Abia state to improve the lives of citizens nationwide.
