Former England defender Kyle Walker has stated he is completely at peace with his choice to step away from international duty. He expressed hope that this transition will allow him to extend his club playing career, much like his former teammate James Milner. The 36-year-old, who moved to Burnley ahead of the 2025-26 season, earned 96 caps for his country and appeared in five major tournaments, including the European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024.
Addressing his decision to retire in March, Walker noted that it was a collaborative choice made with his family. Despite recent injury crises within the England squad forcing players like Declan Rice to cover at right-back, Walker remains firm that he retired at the right time. He emphasized that he was not anticipating a call-up from manager Thomas Tuchel, as he had already committed to leaving the international stage to prioritize his physical well-being and family life.
Walker, a veteran of six Premier League title wins and a Champions League victory during his tenure at Manchester City, plans to evaluate his future one season at a time. Drawing inspiration from James Milner, who retired from international duty at 30 but continued to play top-flight football until age 40, Walker aims to maintain his performance level for as long as his body allows.
