Kenneth Okonkwo Denies Resisting Rotimi Amaechi’s Nomination

Kenneth Okonkwo clarifies that his advocacy for a South-East vice-presidential candidate was a geopolitical stance rather than a personal objection to Rotimi Amaechi.

Kenneth Okonkwo, who serves as a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has refuted claims that he fought against the selection of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi as the party’s vice-presidential pick. During a recent appearance on Channels Television, Okonkwo clarified that his previous public statements were simply an endorsement for a candidate from the South-East, not a personal attack on Amaechi.

Addressing the constraints of the Electoral Act 2026, Okonkwo noted that the pool of eligible candidates from the South-East was effectively limited because many preferred individuals were not registered party members at the required time. He emphasized that once Peter Obi departed, the party needed a candidate with the stamina for a national campaign. Okonkwo highlighted that Amaechi’s significant performance in the presidential primaries made him a vital stakeholder whose influence was necessary for the party’s success.

While confirming his support for the party’s final decision, Okonkwo suggested that leadership could have handled the situation better by consulting with South-East stakeholders to explain the technical hurdles. He also praised Atiku Abubakar, noting that the presidential candidate initiated broader party discussions immediately upon his return to Nigeria, ensuring that key voices were heard.
