The board of trustees at the Kennedy Center, largely composed of allies to President Donald Trump, has reportedly reached a decision to reintroduce his name to the arts complex through a specific inscription. Sources cited by The New York Times and The Washington Post indicate that the board voted to add the phrase “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump” directly beneath the primary signage of the facility.
This development follows a federal court ruling in May that necessitated the removal of Trump’s name from the exterior of the building, a move the court noted could only be authorized by an act of Congress. While Executive Director Matt Floca confirmed in mid-June that all physical signage bearing the President’s name had been taken down, a persistent tarp covering the facade has led to ongoing speculation regarding the true status of the site. It remains uncertain how this new board action will align with the standing judicial mandate.
In a related development, the board approved a proposal to shutter the primary building for a two-year renovation project. This plan, which focuses on upgrading climate control, electrical, and fire safety systems, is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2028. Although this initiative was previously blocked by a judge, the court indicated that the proposal could be revisited following additional scrutiny. Since resuming office in January 2025, President Trump has actively sought to associate his name and image with various public institutions, departing from standard political customs.
