Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has signed with the Turkish club Bursaspor, turning down a contract extension from Celtic. The 29-year-old leaves Glasgow following a season where he contributed to a domestic league and cup double despite battling injuries.
Although Celtic attempted to retain the former Leicester City and Manchester City player, he chose to pursue an opportunity in Turkey. Bursaspor, recently promoted to the second tier, officially presented the Nigerian striker in their team kit on Friday.
This transfer adds pressure to a demanding window for Celtic. Chief executive Michael Nicholson recently noted the struggle to bolster the roster while facing competition from wealthy English Championship sides. Currently, Camilo Duran is the team’s sole acquisition. Meanwhile, concerns persist regarding the future of Daizen Maeda, whose contract is nearing its end.
Iheanacho arrived at Celtic as a free agent following his exit from Sevilla. Despite a hamstring issue limiting his appearances, he managed nine goals in all competitions and proved vital during the club’s successful push for the league title and Scottish Cup.
