Welsh national players Angharad James-Turner and Ethan Ampadu have modeled the country’s latest home football kit, which has sparked mixed reactions from supporters. Some critics have likened the shirt’s distinct pattern to vintage bus upholstery.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) launched the design this Thursday, stating the look draws inspiration from historical Welsh double-cloth weaving. This release marks the debut of sportswear brand Sudu as the kit manufacturer, replacing Adidas after a 13-year partnership.
The FAW maintains that kit preferences are personal, noting they are proud of the design process. They emphasized that the collaboration with Sudu aimed to reflect the nation’s identity while moving away from recycled designs. The adult ‘pro’ shirt is priced at £90, while a replica version retails for £70.
Online criticism has been harsh, with some fans labeling it the least impressive Welsh design to date. However, others have defended the aesthetic, suggesting that a similar design produced by a brand like Adidas would have been better received. FAW CEO Noel Mooney previously stated that the switch in manufacturers was necessary to secure better resources for the grassroots game in Wales.
