Kebbi Farmer Rescues Buried Newborn Girl, Plans Naming Ceremony
A farmer in Kebbi State, Kabiru Kamba, has shared the incredible story of how he discovered and rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area.
Speaking on Monday to members of the state’s Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group (TWG), led by former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, Kamba recounted the life-changing moment that unfolded last Friday.
He explained that he noticed an unusual ridge while working on his farm and, driven by curiosity, flagged down some passing motorcyclists for assistance.
“As we dug, we unearthed a piece of fabric buried in the soil. I immediately alerted the police at a nearby checkpoint. When they arrived and dug deeper, we found a newborn baby girl—alive, crying, and wrapped in cloth,” he said.
Kamba has since taken custody of the baby, stating it was an act of compassion and humanity. “It was only natural to help. I asked for custody out of pity. The local government handed her over to me pending the outcome of police investigations.”
Remarkably, Kamba’s wife had just given birth, making it possible for her to breastfeed the rescued child. The couple now plans to hold a naming ceremony on Wednesday.
“We’ve bought a ram and all we need for her naming. By Allah’s will, she’ll be named then,” Kamba added.
His wife expressed joy and acceptance of the baby, saying, “I was happy when my husband told me. I’ll care for her just like my own.”
In response, Hammani praised the family’s kindness and assured them that the situation would be reported to the state’s First Lady, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further support.
TWG Secretary, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, commended the farmer’s selflessness and thanked the police for acting swiftly in investigating the case. He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to justice and protection for vulnerable individuals.
As part of their visit, the TWG donated baby essentials, including clothes, soap, diapers, milk, mosquito netting, a mattress, and a baby bed.
