UCH Nurses Join Nationwide Strike Over Poor Welfare and Staffing Gaps
Nurses and midwives at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have joined the nationwide seven-day warning strike declared by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The UCH chapter commenced the action following a congress meeting on Wednesday, urging patients to remain patient during the industrial action.
Branch chairperson Mrs. Olufunmilola Faminu said the strike was in line with directives from the NANNM national body after the Federal Government failed to address their longstanding demands.
Key demands include the recruitment of more nurses, improved hospital facilities, and the creation of a nursing directorate within the Federal Ministry of Health. They’re also seeking centralized internship training, better representation at the ministry, and a review of allowances.
Faminu expressed empathy for patients affected by the strike but emphasized that nurses could no longer overlook the worsening conditions affecting their profession.
