A Kansas sheriff’s deputy, 34-year-old Elijah Ming, was fatally shot on July 26 while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Wyandotte County. He and a Kansas City police officer had arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m. for a civil standby when a man opened fire, striking Ming.
Additional officers returned fire, wounding the suspect later identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris—who then barricaded himself inside the home. After surrendering, Harris was hospitalized, then taken into custody the next morning. He now faces charges for the capital murder of a law enforcement officer.
Deputy Ming, a nearly nine-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Sheriff Daniel Soptic described him as a dedicated and beloved member of the agency. Harris is being held without bond as investigations continue.
