Kano Consumer Council Presses IPMAN to Lower Petrol Prices

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council is calling on petroleum marketers to lower petrol prices to reflect global market trends and ensure fair measurement at pumps.

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has formally requested that the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) lower fuel prices in response to decreasing global oil costs. Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, the KSCPC Executive Chairman, emphasized during a meeting with IPMAN leadership that residents should see these savings reflected at the pump.

Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, the KSCPC’s Director of Education and Public Enlightenment, noted that the council is troubled by the persistent high cost of petrol despite international price drops. Dr. Muhammad urged marketers to alleviate the financial strain on citizens by aligning local retail prices with current market conditions. Furthermore, he addressed reports of under-dispensing at stations, calling on IPMAN to improve oversight and guarantee that customers receive the full amount of fuel they purchase.

In response, Alhaji Gana Abubakar, the chairman of IPMAN in Kano, stated that current retail prices remain high because marketers are still selling inventory acquired before the recent market shift. He explained that these existing stocks make immediate price adjustments challenging. Nevertheless, Abubakar promised that consumers will see lower rates once new, more affordable supplies are distributed.
