Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, has urged African leaders to prioritize the stability of democratic institutions and the preservation of judicial independence. Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, she emphasized that these elements are essential for the continent’s democratic future.
The event, attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Bala Mohammed, explored the theme of how political parties and the judiciary can safeguard democratic systems. Represented by Justice Mistura Bolaji, Dongban-Mensem highlighted that democracy thrives only when nations commit to the rule of law, constitutional governance, and accountability.
She identified the judiciary as the ultimate guarantor of civil rights and constitutional order. Simultaneously, she noted that political parties are fundamental to leadership development. According to Dongban-Mensem, both sectors must collaborate to maintain public trust and democratic legitimacy. She concluded by stating that ongoing discussions regarding the connection between these institutions are vital for democratic progress in Africa.
