Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, Chairman of the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), announced that 4,216 students with disabilities have successfully gained entry into various Nigerian tertiary institutions over the past decade. This achievement is attributed to the efforts of the JEOG, a program initiated by JAMB Registrar Professor Is-haq Oloyede to ensure equitable access to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Speaking at a recent stakeholder forum in Abuja, Professor Okebukola highlighted that approximately 53 percent of these candidates secure placement annually. He emphasized that these students are held to the same rigorous academic standards as their peers, noting that many demonstrate remarkable proficiency in demanding fields such as law.
The discussion also explored the potential for artificial intelligence to further enhance inclusivity within the academic sector. By leveraging new technologies, stakeholders aim to continue breaking down barriers for students with disabilities, proving that support and opportunity are the primary factors for educational success.
