Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Late President Muhammadu Buhari
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri will be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honour of the late former president.
The announcement was made on Thursday, July 17, during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held to pay tribute to Buhari, who recently passed away.
In his address, President Tinubu praised Buhari’s legacy, describing him as a leader known for his discipline, integrity, and deep sense of patriotism.
“Before we take the prayers — in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded) — can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu declared to a round of applause from those present.
The renaming is part of broader efforts by the government to honour Buhari’s contributions to national development and his enduring influence on Nigeria’s political landscape.
