Emerse Fae, the manager who guided Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations success in 2023, has expressed deep disappointment over comments made by former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger. Prior to a World Cup match against Ivory Coast, Schweinsteiger characterized the team’s play as ‘wild’ and lacking in tactical structure, associating these traits with what he termed ‘African football.’
Following Ivory Coast’s historic advancement to the World Cup knockout rounds, Fae addressed the controversy. He stated that while he once admired Schweinsteiger as a player, he found the remarks problematic. Fae noted that if one were to speak plainly, the comments could be interpreted as racist. He emphasized that the focus should remain on demonstrating that African squads are defined by technical and tactical depth rather than just physical ability.
Schweinsteiger, serving as a commentator for the broadcaster ARD, had previously suggested that opponents needed to be ready for an ‘unpredictable’ and ‘unorthodox’ style from the Ivorians. While the remarks stirred significant debate within German media circles, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declined to offer a critique when questioned, citing the sensitivity of the issue. Despite the tension, Ivory Coast is set to proceed to the next stage of the tournament to face either France or Norway.
