Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Qatar this Wednesday to honor the memory of the nation’s late former emir. This diplomatic trip follows recent Iranian military strikes directed at the Gulf state.
According to the Iranian foreign ministry, Araghchi plans to engage with Qatari leadership and share formal condolences regarding the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who held power from 1995 until 2013.
The visit occurs during a period of escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, reaching levels not seen since an April ceasefire. Current hostilities trace back to late February when joint US-Israeli operations against Iran prompted retaliatory strikes against US interests and Israel.
These developments threaten the fragile agreement brokered last month by Qatar and Pakistan. Fighting intensified earlier this month following maritime attacks in the Gulf attributed to Iranian forces. The US military continues to concentrate efforts on coastal regions near the Strait of Hormuz, while Qatar, home to a major American military installation, confirmed it was struck by an Iranian attack on Sunday.
