Inside the Operation: How Oyo Students Were Freed from Captivity

Forty-four kidnapped schoolchildren and their teachers have been released in Oyo State after a strategic military operation and intelligence-led pressure crippled their captors.

Following a 56-day ordeal, 44 schoolchildren and seven teachers kidnapped in Oyo State have been released. Abducted on May 15, 2026, in the Orire Local Government Area, the victims were recovered through a coordinated multi-agency military mission. Intelligence-sharing between the Army, Police, and the Department of State Services proved essential. By tracking the kidnappers’ communications, authorities identified the suspects and pressured their families, which severely destabilized the criminal group. Furthermore, a 16-hour curfew implemented by Governor Seyi Makinde prevented the militants from relocating their hostages to Niger State.

The operation, directed by the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan and supported by various national security bodies and local vigilantes, successfully rescued the captives. Military sources confirmed the loss of Lieutenant F.A. Isaac during the engagement, though official casualty numbers remain unverified. The freed individuals are currently undergoing medical treatment.

Public figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, lauded the security forces while simultaneously calling for better national protection and leadership. The Sultan of Sokoto praised the collaboration, urging similar efforts for hostages in Borno State. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called for full transparency regarding whether the release resulted from a raid or negotiation, also suggesting compensation for the victims. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and local monarchs echoed these sentiments, noting that the rescue reinforces confidence in the current government’s security strategy.
