The Government of India has declared a three-day state mourning in tribute to His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.

The pontiff, who made history as the first non-European leader of the Catholic Church in nearly 1,300 years, died following complications from a cerebral stroke.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the mourning will be observed on April 22 (Tuesday), April 23 (Wednesday), and on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral, which is scheduled to be held at St. Peter’s Square.

“As a mark of respect, three-day state mourning shall be observed throughout India,” the ministry’s statement read.

During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed, and there will be no official entertainment or ceremonial events.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow at the Pope’s passing, calling him “a symbol of compassion and spiritual courage.” He extended condolences on behalf of the nation to the global Catholic community.

Modi fondly remembered his meeting with Pope Francis at the G7 Summit in Italy, describing it as a deeply inspiring experience.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also offered his condolences, highlighting the Pope’s kindness and far-reaching global perspective.

Originally from Argentina and born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis was elected the 266th pontiff in 2013, making history as the first Pope from the Americas.

The Vatican has commenced a traditional nine-day mourning period, known as Novendiale, ahead of the conclave to select his successor.
