Impact of the World Cup on Premier League Team Readiness

A look at how the 2026 World Cup has exhausted Premier League squads, leading to injuries and limited preparation time ahead of the new season.

The recent World Cup held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico has placed a significant burden on Premier League clubs. With the tournament concluding just 33 days before the new season, teams are managing exhausted squads and injury setbacks. Manchester City leads the league in total minutes played by their stars, reaching 5,027, with Rodri accounting for 537 of those. Arsenal follows closely with 4,285 minutes logged by their players.

Physical tolls have been substantial, with several high-profile injuries reported. Amadou Onana of Aston Villa suffered a torn ACL, while Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte was sidelined by a knee issue. Others, including Andy Robertson and Reece James, are navigating ongoing concerns. Players who reached the final are expected to return as late as August 10, leaving very little time to recover before the Premier League campaign kicks off.

Managers such as Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca have expressed concern over the sustainability of such a packed schedule. With many players participating in three consecutive summer tournaments, including the 2024 Euros and the Club World Cup, the physical demand is reaching a breaking point. Fifa regulations mandate a three-week break, yet the tight turnaround ensures that top clubs will be starting their seasons without their full-strength rosters.
