Igbo Leaders Warn That Suppressing Opposition Threatens Nigerian Democracy

The Igbo Leaders of Thought have cautioned that the systematic intimidation of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), a collective of intellectuals and traditional figures from Southeastern Nigeria, has spoken out against the organized suppression of opposition parties in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. The group emphasized that a healthy democracy requires a robust opposition, warning that current trends could undermine the credibility of the upcoming polls.

This concern follows recent complaints from Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding his personal safety and the obstruction of his business interests. The ILT highlighted legal rulings against opposition parties as evidence of a strategy to disrupt their campaign preparations. Furthermore, the group revisited an incident earlier this year where Peter Obi’s entourage faced gunfire while visiting Edo State, following previous warnings from Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding his security.

In a statement issued by Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi and Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the ILT criticized the alleged use of state institutions—specifically security agencies, the judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—to weaken political rivals. The leaders reminded officials that Nigeria’s current democratic system was born from significant sacrifices during the struggle against military rule.

Drawing on historical examples of political instability, the ILT cited the 1962 ‘Operation Wetie’ in Western Nigeria, the 1983 unrest in Ondo State, and the post-election violence of 2011. They warned that failing to learn from these past crises could lead to similar outcomes today. The group concluded by urging those in power to abandon these tactics to avoid pushing the nation toward further political turmoil.
