The Idoma Association USA has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding immediate intervention to curb the ongoing security crisis within Benue South. In a formal appeal, the group emphasized that their long-standing restraint in the face of continuous provocation should not be viewed as a sign of vulnerability.
Highlighting the July 11 and 12 assaults on Akpachi village in Ugboju and Otukpo-Nobi, which resulted in the loss of at least 20 lives, the organization argued that such violence is a recurring tragedy. They noted that residents in areas including Agatu, Apa, and Otukpo have suffered for years from displacement and economic instability. Despite warnings allegedly provided to local security services by traditional leaders, the violence persisted.
The association reminded the administration of its fundamental constitutional duty to safeguard citizens. While they acknowledged the recent visit of Governor Hyacinth Alia to Otukpo, they expressed that immediate, tangible safety measures are far more vital than symbolic gestures. The letter, signed by Prince Dr. Edwin Ochai and Chief Sylvester Onche Steno, calls for a permanent military presence, a formal inquiry into the attacks, and legal accountability for the perpetrators to ensure lasting stability in the region.
