Newport County has selected Hayden Mullins, formerly the coach of Fulham’s Under-21 squad, to lead the team as their new permanent manager. This move addresses the vacancy created by the unexpected departure of Christian Fuchs just before the pre-season began. While Chris Todd served as interim manager during recent friendlies, he is expected to stay on staff, whereas assistant manager Mark Smith has opted to leave the club.
Mullins brings extensive experience to the role, having previously played for clubs like West Ham United and Crystal Palace. His transition into management included stints at Watford and a tenure as the head coach of Colchester United, as well as leading the Turks and Caicos Islands national team. Last season, he achieved success by guiding Fulham’s Under-21s to a Premier League Cup title.
Huw Jenkins, who took ownership of Newport in early 2024, has now appointed his fourth permanent manager following the tenures of Nelson Jardim, Dave Hughes, and Fuchs. Mullins assumes command immediately and will oversee his first pre-season match against Yeovil this Saturday. The team’s competitive calendar begins with a Carabao Cup fixture against AFC Wimbledon on August 8, followed by their League Two season opener against Rochdale on August 15.
