Hakeem Baba-Ahmed: Nigeria’s Opposition Parties Live in Constant Apprehension

PRP leader Hakeem Baba-Ahmed claims only the APC feels secure in Nigeria’s current political climate following a court decision to deregister the NDC.

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a prominent leader within the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), claims that opposition figures across Nigeria remain perpetually unsettled. According to the former presidential aide, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) is the only political entity that does not face this ongoing anxiety.

This observation follows a significant ruling from the Federal High Court in Lokoja. Justice Isah Dashen reversed a previous directive that would have forced the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party. The reversal came after the Peace Movement Party (PMP) successfully argued they were excluded from the original legal proceedings. Justice Dashen emphasized that all interested parties must have their say before the court can reach a final conclusion on such matters.

During a television appearance, Baba-Ahmed described the court’s decision regarding the NDC as deeply concerning for the democratic landscape. He suggested that any political organization claiming to feel secure in the current Nigerian climate is not fully engaged with the realities of the system.
