Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially opened the Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege. This facility is a vital part of the state government’s broader initiative to modernize food distribution and ensure more affordable prices for residents.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the hub acts as an essential link in a strategy to transform the agricultural sector. Currently, the state food economy is worth over N16 trillion, yet more than 70 percent of consumed produce originates from outside Lagos. By establishing these hubs, the government aims to tackle high transport costs, storage shortages, and price volatility.
This Agege location marks the third in a series of mid-level hubs. The first, located in Mushin, has facilitated over N4 billion in trade since late 2023. A second hub in Abijo was commissioned earlier this year by President Bola Tinubu. These centers are designed to streamline supply chains and enhance produce handling efficiency.
The project, created alongside Origin Tech Group, covers 7,000 square metres. It features significant dry and cold storage capabilities and space for up to 400 vendors. Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, confirmed that full operations will begin in six weeks, following the implementation of a comprehensive management framework.
Future plans include expanding this network to areas such as Ikorodu, Apapa, Festac, and Lekki. The state is also heavily investing in human capital through various training programs for farmers, fishermen, and youth, while advancing the development of the major logistics center in Epe and the Imota Rice Mill.
