Germany Fumes After Disputed VAR Decision Eliminates World Cup Goal

Germany’s hopes were dashed after a controversial VAR ruling disallowed a late extra-time goal against Paraguay, sparking criticism from manager Julian Nagelsmann and football experts.

Germany faced a controversial moment during their World Cup match against Paraguay when Jonathan Tah’s extra-time header, which would have put his team ahead 2-1, was overturned by the video assistant referee. The goal was wiped off the board after officials determined that Waldemar Anton had obstructed goalkeeper Orlando Gill during the preceding corner kick.

Referee Jalal Jayed consulted the pitchside monitor before deciding to cancel the goal. The decision drew immediate criticism from pundits, including Alan Shearer, who argued that the goalkeeper had manipulated the officials with a theatrical fall. Shearer described the incident as pathetic and noted that physical contact is expected in football.

German manager Julian Nagelsmann was visibly angry following the ruling, labeling the decision a joke. His protests resulted in a yellow card. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also expressed disbelief, suggesting that such goals are routinely accepted in the English Premier League.

Former officials and commentators, including Darren Cann and Pat Nevin, noted that while there was minor contact, it was insufficient to warrant a goal-disallowing foul. Despite the frustration over the disallowed effort, Germany eventually exited the tournament after losing a penalty shootout 4-3, following a 1-1 draw.
