Gaizka Mendieta, the retired Spanish national team midfielder, has identified his two primary favorites for this year’s Ballon d’Or. He points to Lionel Messi and teenage talent Lamine Yamal as the individuals most likely to secure the honor.
According to Mendieta, the outcome of the 2026 World Cup final will be the deciding element. If Argentina defeats Spain, he believes Messi will claim his ninth title. Conversely, should Spain win a second championship, he argues that the team’s contributors should be considered, specifically highlighting Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal.
Speaking to Goal, Mendieta noted that the World Cup holds immense weight for voters. He praised Yamal for his vital role at Barcelona and within the national squad, noting that the youngster has maintained a high level of performance despite dealing with injury setbacks. Meanwhile, Messi has demonstrated strong form during the North American tournament, recording eight goals and four assists. In comparison, Yamal has managed one goal across seven appearances.
