FUT Minna Campus Shut Down Following Student Protests Over Deadly Robberies

Students at FUT Minna blocked campus gates and the Minna-Bida road to protest a student’s death and escalating robbery attacks, forcing the cancellation of academic activities.

Students at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, halted all campus operations on Tuesday. The demonstration involved blocking the Minna-Bida Road after reports surfaced regarding the killing of a student by suspected robbers and frequent attacks on individuals living outside the campus.

The university main gate was obstructed, preventing staff, lecturers, and administrators from entering the premises. The unrest was ignited by an incident three days ago involving a fatal robbery, followed by another assault on Monday evening that resulted in several injuries to students.

Protesters expressed frustration with school management, claiming that security around off-campus housing remains poor despite students paying a mandatory annual security fee of N10,000. Because of the shutdown, scheduled computer-based examinations for first and third-year students were suspended.

Lydia Legbo, the institution’s spokesperson, stated that university leadership is actively consulting with stakeholders to stabilize the area. She noted that authorities are implementing strategies to bolster security measures and address the safety concerns of students residing off-campus.
