Among the 156 golfers competing at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, David Howard’s path to the tournament stands out as truly extraordinary. For the trained mechanic from County Cork, playing alongside the world’s elite was once an impossible dream.
Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age seven, Howard endured frequent hospital stays throughout his childhood. As a teenager, he searched for the condition’s life expectancy online and read estimates suggesting he might only live into his mid-20s. Now 27 and in good health, Howard finds his presence among top-tier professionals difficult to comprehend.
While medical advancements in 2018 significantly improved his quality of life, the COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges. Fear of illness led him to isolate, which eventually triggered a difficult mental health crisis requiring hospitalization. After recovering, Howard finished his mechanics apprenticeship and rededicated himself to golf, determined to pursue his passion without regret.
To maintain his health, Howard takes approximately 30 pills daily. This disciplined routine has fueled his recent success, including winning the 2025 East of Ireland title. After advancing through regional and final qualifying events—the latter held at Dundonald Links with his father, John, serving as caddy—Howard secured his place at The Open.
The debutant recently enjoyed practice rounds with Irish icons Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry. As he prepares for his first tournament appearance, Howard hopes his journey serves as a beacon of hope for others living with cystic fibrosis. He encourages those facing similar struggles to remain resilient and continue pursuing their personal ambitions.
