Former Benue University Student Imprisoned for Theft as Institution Tightens Security

A former Benue State university student received a one-year prison sentence for vandalism, prompting school officials to reiterate their zero-tolerance policy regarding campus crime.

The Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in Makurdi, Benue State, has firmly declared its dedication to protecting campus safety. Authorities warned that individuals caught stealing, vandalizing, or breaking the law will face strict legal consequences. Gbehe Simon Ingbian, the Chief Security Officer, shared these sentiments during a meeting with the Director of Information, Protocol, and Public Relations, Ms. Funmilayo Augustina Tolufashe, to improve internal communication regarding security initiatives.

On July 14, 2026, campus security officials apprehended Victor Dzer, a former Economics student, for damaging an air-conditioning unit on university grounds. He was turned over to the ‘E’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Makurdi. Following a trial at Magistrate Court 9, Dzer was sentenced to one year in prison without an option for a fine. Ingbian emphasized that this ruling serves as a warning against those who would threaten university assets or student safety.

Ms. Tolufashe praised the security team for their diligent efforts in maintaining order. She pledged the full support of her department to help spread awareness about campus regulations. Both units urged students and staff to remain vigilant, report any unusual activity, and assist in keeping the university a secure place for academic pursuits.
