Florida Executes Five-Time Convicted Killer Who Thanked Executioners in Final Words

Michael Bernard Bell, a 54-year-old five-time convicted murderer, was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday, July 15, at Florida State Prison. As he took his final breaths, Bell offered a surprising farewell:

“Thank you for not letting me spend the rest of my life in prison.”

His calm and even grateful demeanor stunned witnesses, especially given the gruesome trail of violence he left behind.

Bell was sentenced to death for the 1993 fatal shootings of Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith, whom he mistakenly believed were connected to his brother’s killer. Armed with an AK-47 and fueled by vengeance, Bell opened fire on their vehicle outside a bar — killing West on the spot and fatally injuring Smith. A third passenger managed to escape.

Investigators later linked Bell to three other murders:

In 1989, he killed a woman and her toddler son.

Just months before the 1993 bar shootings, he murdered his mother’s boyfriend.

Bell spent nearly 30 years on death row. On his final day, he awoke at 6:30 a.m. and chose a simple last meal: omelet, bacon, home fries, and orange juice.

He was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m., according to Governor Ron DeSantis’ spokesperson, Bryan Griffin.

Bell’s execution is the 26th in the U.S. this year and the 8th in Florida, placing the state among the most active in capital punishment for 2025.
