Five Israeli Soldiers Killed in Gaza Combat, Military Confirms
Five Israeli soldiers were killed on Tuesday in combat operations in the northern Gaza Strip, marking one of the deadliest days for Israeli forces in the embattled Palestinian territory this year, the Israeli military has confirmed.
The fatalities occurred near Beit Hanun when a series of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated, followed by gunfire during the evacuation of the wounded. The soldiers, aged between 20 and 28, belonged to the ultra-Orthodox Netzach Yehuda battalion, according to military sources.
Two additional soldiers sustained severe injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for urgent treatment. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the affected families have been notified.
Reacting from Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mourned the losses, describing it as a “difficult morning” during his visit for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is pushing for a ceasefire in the nearly two-year conflict.
“All of Israel bows its head and mourns the fall of our heroic soldiers, who risked their lives in the battle to defeat Hamas and free all our hostages,” Netanyahu posted on X.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed the grief, calling the news “unbearable,” while opposition leader Yair Lapid stressed the urgency of ending the war.
“For the sake of the fighters, for the sake of their families, for the sake of the hostages, for the sake of the State of Israel: this war must be ended,” Lapid said.
Ceasefire Talks Stalled
Meanwhile, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed on Sunday in Doha, with both parties housed in separate rooms. A Palestinian official familiar with the discussions told AFP that Monday’s round concluded with “no breakthrough.”
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to join the Doha talks this week as part of renewed efforts to broker a ceasefire. The current U.S. proposal reportedly includes a 60-day truce, the release of 10 hostages held by Hamas since the October 7, 2023 attack, and the return of several bodies in exchange for Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.
Palestinian sources say Hamas is demanding guarantees that fighting will not resume during negotiations, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza, and the restoration of UN-led aid distribution to the region.
War Toll and Humanitarian Crisis
Since the war began, at least 445 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Hamas’s unprecedented October 2023 assault on southern Israel claimed 1,219 lives, mostly civilians.
Israel’s military response has killed at least 57,523 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The United Nations considers these figures credible. Humanitarian groups warn of catastrophic conditions for the over 2 million people still trapped inside the besieged enclave.
As ceasefire efforts intensify and military casualties mount, pressure is growing on both sides to find a path to de-escalation, a path still mired in mistrust, bloodshed, and fragile hope.
