Five African Players Contend for FIFA Best Young Player at 2026 World Cup

Five African football prospects have been named among the top candidates for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Best Young Player award following their impressive tournament performances.

African football is showcasing immense talent at the 2026 World Cup, with five emerging stars listed among the top candidates for the FIFA Best Young Player trophy. FIFA identified 11 players born after January 1, 2005, who earned this distinction through stellar group-stage performances that propelled their nations into the knockout rounds.

The contenders include the 19-year-old RB Leipzig forward from Côte d’Ivoire, who impressed with an assist against Curaçao and recorded 10 successful dribbles alongside 10 created chances in his first three games. His teammate, midfielder Christ Inao Oulai, also received praise for his steady influence in securing the Elephants’ spot in the next round.

Algeria’s Maza stands out after appearing in every group match and earning a ‘Superior Player of the Match’ title for his efforts in the victory against Jordan. Morocco’s 18-year-old talent Bouaddi showcased significant composure in midfield, managing two shots during the Round of 32 clash with the Netherlands. Finally, Senegalese winger Mbaye secured his place in history as the youngest African to ever score at a World Cup, netting a goal against France at just 18 years and 143 days old.
