Los Angeles officials have confirmed that Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke passed away in May due to the accidental effects of cocaine and heroin. The 29-year-old was discovered unresponsive in a San Fernando Valley home on May 11, 2026, and was declared dead shortly after.
The medical examiner noted that a combination of undisclosed prescription medications also played a significant role in the tragedy. A comprehensive report regarding the incident is expected to be released by authorities in the future.
Clarke, a Vancouver native who held dual citizenship in Canada and the United States, was selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft. Over his career, he appeared in 309 games and averaged 10.2 points. Despite a successful start that included a 2020 All-Rookie First Team selection, his final season was limited to just two appearances due to injury. He had also faced legal challenges in Arkansas last April regarding drug possession and speeding.
Following his death, the Memphis Grizzlies organization expressed deep sorrow, describing Clarke as an exceptional person and teammate whose contributions to both the team and the Memphis community would be long remembered.
