The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) is collaborating with the Lagos State and Amuwo-Odofin Local governments to overhaul critical road infrastructure within Festac Town. This initiative aims to address years of deterioration, enhance traffic management, and bolster drainage systems to mitigate flooding issues.
Current construction efforts focus on segments of 2nd and 7th Avenues, including a 3.2-kilometre stretch of 2nd Avenue, as part of an 18-month strategic plan. These efforts follow earlier successes, such as the rehabilitation of the First Gate, 1st Avenue, and 5th Avenue, which saw the addition of solar streetlights and improved accessibility.
Observations at the site indicate active road grading, asphalt laying, and the installation of new drainage channels. While these activities have caused temporary traffic diversions, residents are optimistic about the long-term benefits. Local motorists and community members, including Chinedu Okafor and Chioma Dike, praised the initiative as a necessary solution to persistent potholes and recurring flooding that have long plagued the estate.
The project addresses historical neglect stemming from population growth and past jurisdictional disputes. By improving these vital links, the FHA seeks to facilitate better access to schools, businesses, and medical facilities, ultimately boosting economic activity and safety for the hundreds of thousands who rely on these routes daily.
