A Federal High Court in Ibadan has officially barred the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from auditing the accounts of the Oyo State government. This ruling was issued on Wednesday in response to a legal challenge brought forward by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
Justice Nkeonye Maha presided over the case, identified as Suit No. FHC/IB/CS/61/2025. While the court recognized the mandate of the EFCC to investigate financial crimes, it clarified that such actions must strictly adhere to constitutional requirements. The judge characterized the commission’s attempt to examine state records as based on speculation rather than concrete evidence.
The legal dispute originated after the EFCC contacted the state’s Accountant General regarding fiscal records. Abiodun Aikomo, serving as both state counsel and Attorney General, argued that the agency overstepped its bounds by pursuing an investigation without factual grounds. Following these arguments, the court ruled in favor of the Oyo State government, effectively halting the commission’s planned inquiry.
