Bauchi female students face flooding in damaged school hostel

Students at a Bauchi secondary school are struggling with a flooded, roofless hostel following a damaging windstorm, prompting state officials to initiate emergency assessments and relocations.

Students at Government Girls Secondary School in Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State, are dealing with severe flooding in their dormitory. A violent windstorm during recent rains tore the roof off the building, leaving the interior fully exposed to the elements. Footage of the scene reveals water covering the floor, with metal beds submerged and pupils attempting to bail out the structure using buckets. This incident has sparked a broader conversation regarding the poor state of public school infrastructure in the region.

In response, the Bauchi State government is evaluating the damage caused by the storm. Hon. Abdulkadir Ibrahim, the Commissioner for Education, confirmed that four hostels at the Tafawa Balewa school were ruined by the high winds. Students have been moved to temporary accommodations while authorities finalize an inspection. Teams are currently surveying all impacted institutions to provide a full report to Governor Bala Mohammed, who is expected to authorize repairs to resume normal school operations.
