Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore was taken into custody in Michigan on Wednesday night and is now under investigation for possible criminal charges, according to the Saline Police Department.
Saline officers confirmed they helped track down and detain Moore before transferring him to Pittsfield Township police, who are leading the inquiry. His detention came just hours after the university abruptly fired him, citing “credible evidence” that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Court records indicate Moore was booked into Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m. ET, though no charges had been filed as of Wednesday night.
Pittsfield Township police did not name Moore in their own release but said they were investigating an alleged assault reported around 4:10 p.m. local time.
“A suspect was taken into custody… This incident does not appear random, and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” the department stated. The suspect remains jailed pending review by the county prosecutor.
The university announced Moore’s immediate dismissal shortly before 5 p.m., stressing that the findings of its internal review violated school policy.
“Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member… U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” the statement read.
Michigan has appointed Biff Poggi as interim head coach while the investigation continues and the dust from this sudden fall settles.
