The European Union delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has officially refuted media reports suggesting it turned down an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the 2027 general elections. Reports had speculated that the EU avoided the process due to security issues and previous tensions surrounding its 2023 election observation.
Gautier Mignot, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, clarified that the union did not reject the invitation. Instead, the EU informed INEC on July 28, 2026, that it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts. These experts will receive official accreditation from INEC to evaluate whether the electoral proceedings align with national, regional, and international democratic standards.
The ambassador emphasized that the mission will generate a final report with recommendations to strengthen Nigeria’s future electoral framework. Mignot dismissed rumors regarding security concerns or host-country hostility as entirely speculative and inaccurate. He noted that the EU selects the format of its missions based on available resources and the specific context of each partner nation.
This decision will not hinder existing EU-funded initiatives like the ‘Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria’ project. The delegation further encouraged media outlets to verify information with their press office before publishing to prevent the spread of misleading stories.
