The European Union has officially dismissed claims that it intends to bypass Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Gautier Mignot, the EU ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, stated on Monday that recent media reports suggesting such a withdrawal are entirely false.
These reports, which were cited by the Peoples Democratic Party, incorrectly claimed that the EU had declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission due to security concerns and previous diplomatic grievances. In reality, the EU has accepted the invitation and plans to deploy an Electoral Expert Mission consisting of two to four independent observers.
Mignot clarified that the decision to send a smaller mission is part of the EU’s routine annual process for evaluating resource allocation and specific country needs, rather than a political statement. The experts will review the electoral process against established standards and provide recommendations for future improvements. Mignot emphasized that the rumors regarding security or mistreatment are baseless speculations and advised the public to rely only on official communications.
