England Rests Captain Maro Itoje for Springboks Clash

England coach Richard Wigglesworth confirms Maro Itoje will be rested for the upcoming match against South Africa to manage the player’s heavy workload.

England senior assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth believes the decision to rest captain Maro Itoje for the upcoming match against world champions South Africa is the correct move. Itoje, 31, has exceeded the recommended limit of 30 matches per season for two consecutive years. His absence for the 4 July fixture, as well as subsequent tests against Fiji and Argentina, is intended to provide necessary recovery time.

Wigglesworth emphasized that the team’s strength in depth allows them to manage Itoje’s workload effectively. Several options exist for the second row, including George Martin, who recently returned from a long-term injury, and Northampton’s Alex Coles. Ollie Chessum, Charlie Ewels, and Arthur Clark are also included in the squad for the Nations Championship.

Regarding the grueling travel schedule, Wigglesworth dismissed concerns about its impact on performance. Despite a tight turnaround for players involved in the Premiership final, the coach maintains that the team is prepared for the challenge of playing in Johannesburg, Liverpool, and Santiago del Estero. Meanwhile, South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus expressed caution, noting that England’s tactical approach under head coach Steve Borthwick remains difficult to predict. Erasmus also praised English prospect Henry Pollock, dismissing negative commentary surrounding the young forward’s persona and focusing instead on his high-level performance on the pitch.
